About Me & CV

Peter Coates

I’ve been painting professionally for 12 years and now sell originals and prints through selected galleries in the UK and France. My prints are also sold worldwide.

I trained in graphic design at Manchester College of Art and Design. After a brief spell in advertising, I left to start a design consultancy in London which I ran for 14 years. After a period away from the art world, I returned to painting full time and in 2007 had my first one-man-show.

The images I mostly paint are a result of two influences: my training in graphic design together with the use of vibrant colours typical of the Mediterranean and Provence which I frequently visit. I work mainly in oils and acrylics sometimes applying several layers of paint, scraping, then applying more paint to produce an enriched depth of colour. I work into these layers to enhance texture that reflect the patterns of the landscape.
